I have a love-hate relationship with fringe. It can be either amazing or hideous on a costume. It can look fantastic, or it can look ratty and old. Fringe can be tricky to maintain – and never ever put fringe in the washing machine! (I learned that one the hard way)
I’ve read a few tips about people putting clear nailpolish on the ends – which is extremely time consuming – or doing the same but with an actual product called “Fray Check” although both these solutions harden the edges of the fringe when dry, so it could snag some textures (certainly it would change the feel).
I spoke with a dressmaker a few weeks ago who actually recommended spraying the fringe with Scotch Guard which helps keep it fresh. I did a bit of internet searching on the matter and really not much came up at all, unfortunately.
I’ll be trying the Scotch Guard trick to my own dress (along with careful hand-washing) and I am curious to see how it can extend the longevity of fringe… after all, you can only trim the fringe so many times 😛
Hopefully I can make an update to this post after the costume has gone through some wear and tear.
