Like many, my first few costumes were ebay specials that came from overseas at a price that was affordable. I often had to correct issues with the dresses once I got them – usually the measurements were off, and they often had construction-related issues. Many straps and bra-cup alterations (or additions!) were required as well. The quality was poor and the rhinestones usually plastic, in spite of what the dress description claimed. And the dress I ordered usually didn’t look anything like the advertised picture…. which brings me to another point: I definitely no longer support these ‘companies’. I since recognize many of the pictures that have been stolen from legitimate costume makers’ webpages and passed off as theirs (with their own watermark logo all over the picture). What you’ll get is garbage as well, if you are lucky enough to even be able to have it relatively fit or arrive in the correct color. Or arrive at all.

Even with a small budget, I recommend sourcing out more local dressmaker (even a seamstress who can sew from a basic dancewear pattern) or reputable costume makers. Many will try their best to work within your budget, or even create a syllabus-style basic garment that is good quality and you will get a product that could last you much longer (you could even embellish it yourself with rhinestones to save costs). And alternatively, there are many resources online to find a previously-loved gown—-sometimes in great condition with a great cost. I’ve collected a few costumes this way very successfully. In fact, at one competition I fell in love with this yellow gown who’s wearer looked approximately my size. I managed to talk with her a little bit and pass along my contact info should she ever be willing to sell the dress in the future. And later, she did! 🙂 –I still have this gown and I still love it!

Alternatively – because I do get asked on occasion where to buy a costume – I’m posting this list of costume makers (some are very are well-known in North America) who all provide a beautiful product and great services. Of course this list is not all-inclusive and I likely will edit and add more in the future.
